Hi Scott, Head South down the A12 towards Lowestoft. Turn left at Corton Long Lane. Down to the end, over the railway bridge to the T junction. Turn left. The station is or was on the left hand side.

A nice though distant memory. My grandad was signalman for the swingbridge until his death in the early/mid fifties. I remember, as a kid, getting on the train at Had HL to go to Aldeby to visit family graves, we were double headed B17/B1

This building is now occupied as a private house but despite the building of the 'bypass' the platform remains although quite overgrown. I used to pass this every morning on my paper round. Station Road (in the foreground) is now a dead end with a fence and a gate leading out onto the A143 'bypass' allowing access to the village (and the 'Queen' pub!) for the residents of the farms which used to be on the other side of the tracks. I wish I was old enough to have seen the Wanveny Valley line when it was still operational. Alas the bypass was built before I was born. Thankyou for posting this photo.

If anyone has any more photo's i would really appreciate it and would also ask if the photographer could email me a copy of the above picture. Thanks.

Wow! I've been looking everywhere for a pic that shows detail of Bungay station. I grew up in Bungay and have started planning a modeling project which I would like to represent Bungay station as closely as possible during the years 1939-45. I have been unable to find any sort of track plan or map showing the layout of sidings etc. On the off chance do you know any way to get this information? I have always wondered what the station would look like but I have only been able to find pictures of the origional wooden structure which was replaced with the brick structure shown in your picture in the early 1930's. I wonder what those chimneys were for? Very interesting. Thankyou.

Hopefully of some help to Joe edwards. I believe the sidings were situated to the east of the station, beyond the bridge from which this photo was obviously taken, this bridge was replaced by a modern concrete footbridge, there was certainly a large railway shed (brick built)in that position. The station itself had a pitched roof with clay roof tile. To locate this position on the A143 look for a wwII pill box on the slope behind the golf club which was almost directly opposite the station.

A totally excellent site. I was amazed to see the ferry vans at Histon so late on. I have a few relics from the line including the illuminated signalbox diagram from St Ives and a few supports for the Oakington airfield tripwire. My first visit to St Ives was around 1977. It has been good to see pictures from around that time with the station in a condition i remember it in. Well done with the site. I just wish i'd had a camera then... Richard..

So good to see an old railway bridge being brought back to life and not being destroyed.I guess so many of these old wrought iron bridges have been destroyed over the years which is a shame when you consider all the work which goes into making them.Seeing all the rivets makes you appreciate the workers who put them there.

The new road alignment, on the left, ploughed right through the station area. The adjacent factory and the rest of the station area is now (Dec 2008) a new housing estate. An official plaque in this location indicates the previous existence of the station. The route of the line towards Fordham is still clear apart from the bridge at Exning Road Halt which has recently been filled in. two other bridges at Fordham were demolished during the construction of Fordham bypass.

The crossing keepers house is still here by the way,but only just! It hasnt been lived in for decades and is falling apart with trees growing inside it! Bloke at work told me it was a woman who operated the crossing gates here, but it must have been a lonely job cos the road dont lead anywhere! Steve.

Hello, Just like to say what a fantastic picture of Saxmundham railway station, just how I remember it as a boy. Being born less than 200 yrds from the track I can remember spending a lot of time in the late 60's and earley 70's watching the trains. It's a shame they pulled down the staion on the Lowestoft line, but then they bulit a 'make shfit' platform 100 yrds down the line, why? Any way thanks for the memorey, b/r Vince

The down line is severed just beyond the red flag and is slewed onto a new turnout, facing for up trains and controlled by a ground frame, giving a connection to the former up line that became known as 'Dead Road' for the duration of the works. I believe the down line was used throughout to Littleport despite there being a box with a crossover at Hilgay. At lttleport No14 lever was brought into use as a facing point lock on the crossover so it could be used by passenger trains regaining up line...

The up slow line has been removed (why?). Stanchions now occupy the vacant trackbed making 'promised' track replacement difficult. Scene is, of course, ruined by electrification paraphernalia.

Note the differences with photos taken just two or three years earlier.Single track. Station canopy demolished. Reduced to one platform, and new housing on site of the original up platform.

This station scene still survives, complete with hand operated gates. On 6/1/2009 brand new gates were in the yard waiting to replace current gates.

The photo caption for 'two viaducts at Cromer' is wrong. The viaducts are at East Runton. The one in the foreground in the disused one, the background one is still used. The shot was taken from the direction of Top Common looking towards Bottom Common

I was thrilled to find this photo on the web, as my great grandfather and his family lived in this cottage in the early 1870s. He was a plate layer and then a railway gate keeper. He died in 1873, probably in this house. Is there any possibility I could buy a copy of the photograph please? Thank you Anne
